Back&Beyond is the flagship publication for Made in Lancaster, a collective of creatives sharing skills and offering peer support. The first issue of Back&Beyond will coincide with the inaugural Made in Lancaster Showcase event in June 2011 and will feature writing from some of the best writers and artists in the region.

The deadline for submissions is Monday February 14th 2011 and should be sent by email to madeinlancaster1@gmail.com

We are particularly keen to receive submissions from those who live in or around the Lancaster area, or have links to it, past or present. If you do not, but the originality or strength of your work smacks us between the eyes, who are we to say no? Excite us!

Fiction: You may send up to 3 pieces for consideration per issue:

Flash fiction pieces up to 800 words, shorter pieces of a few hundred words particularly welcome.

We love the short story form, but space is limited. We would like to publish one short story of up to 2,000 words per issue, but it needs to be a gem. Please send it as one of your three pieces of prose fiction.

Poetry: Up to 3 poems, open theme and form, may be linked or stand alone.

Journalism and Features: We would love to hear from you if you are interested in being a feature writer. We want rich, well-thought out profile, reviews and articles of 250-2000 words (As with the fiction longer article need to be exceptional) with a connection to the creative life or heritage of Lancaster and surrounding area. Email us, including an example of your non-fiction work if possible, and a one-paragraph outline of either your proposed article if you have one, or a description of which areas described above you’d be interested in terms of commission.

Non-fiction, Life writing and Creative Essays: Up to three pieces of 400-800 words each. We are particularly interested in pieces that connect with Lancaster and surrounding area, explore creative practice, or concern cross-medium creativity.

Photography and Illustration: Please send a portfolio of up to 5 images and indicate whether you would also be interested in producing material specifically in response to writing that has been selected for inclusion.

We regret that it is unlikely we will be able to pay people for their work at this stage, but you will receive a free copy of the publication, be invited to our Launch Event and receive associated publicity.

Previously published pieces will be considered, but please ensure re-publication doesn’t contravene a previous agreement. Please also send us details of where it previously appeared and when.
